INTRODUCING LUCKY |
LUCKY'S STORY On the second day of our trip up to Michigan while driving through Kentucky near Renfro Valley on Interstate 75, we first met Lucky. He was running down the median of the Interstate. We pulled over to the shoulder of the freeway and John got out and dodged the heavy, 80 mph traffic to get to the center of the freeway. Not wanting to frighten the dog and have him run into the freeway traffic, John stayed well in back of him and just kept talking to him. That didn't work because he was very scared and kept walking ahead. John returned to the van and we tried to figure out what to do. We then drove on the shoulder very slowly to get up in front of him again. John got out and crossed the freeway again. This time he was in front of Lucky. Lucky started running again and passed by John. By this time two other motorists noticed what was happening and also stopped to try and help. The three of them surrounded Lucky and closed in until he had no where to go. By this time he was tired and just laid down on his back and waved his front paws in the air as if to say, "I Surrender". John scooped him up and dodged the traffic once again to get back to the van. I took Lucky from him and held him on my lap and rubbed his ears until he finally settled down and fell asleep in my arms. Lucky traveled on to Michigan with us that day. The next day we took him to the vet that Jeff and Nicole use for Sabrina and Sabby. Lucky was a little undernourished, but otherwise in good health. He had no collar or microchip identification. We decided to board him with the vet until our return to Florida a week later. Lucky will always have a special place in our hearts but seventeen dogs is just too many to care for properly and we both knew we had to stop somewhere. I contacted the Lakeland, Florida, SPCA and they called and said they could find a home for him. We provided a foster home for Lucky for a week after we returned from Michigan. With much regret we surrendered him to the SPCA after that week. But this story does have a very happy ending. I received a call from the SPCA less than 24 hours after we dropped him off. A family with two boys adopted Lucky. I was told that they said they were the LUCKY ones to have been able to adopt such a wonderful dog. We will never forget Lucky and the time we spent with him, but he now has a wonderful "forever" home. |
